What is the
difference between going to my regular doctor and going to
Long Island Travel Medicine? |
|
 |
Long Island Travel
Medicine physicians specialize in the bacterial, viral and
parasitic infections that can affect travelers. We are up-to-date
on current disease outbreaks, drug resistance patterns and
travel advisories. We can provide country-specific medical
advice and all the required and recommended immunizations.

 |
What
can I expect from a visit to Long Island Travel Medicine |
 |
For the
initial visit expect to spend approximately 1-1 1/2 hours.
You will be asked to answer a detailed health
questionnaire and patient
information pages and to fax them (631-271-3205)
to our office. We will also ask you
to provide info about your specific travel itinerary.
Our board certified doctors will review your medical history
and your current health status and will advise you about
the health risks associated with your trip. We will also
provide written documentation of that discussion. Recommended
and required immunizations will be discussed and provided.
Most vaccines can be administered during a single visit,
however, occasionally you may need to return at a later
date to complete the series immunizations.

 |
My
trip is planned for several months from now. When should I
make an appointment with Long Island Travel Medicine? |
 |
You should
book an appointment as soon as you know your itinerary. After
vaccinations, it takes time for the body to develop an immunity,
and you will need to allow adequate time for this. Also, some
vaccines cannot be administered together and you must allow
several weeks between immunizations. |
 |
What
is Yellow Fever - and can I do anything to prevent it? |
 |
Yellow
fever is viral illness transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes.
The disease occurs in sub-Sahara Africa, South America and
the Caribbean. It is characterized by fever and chills, headache,
backache, muscle pains, nausea and vomiting. Although these
symptoms improve after 3-4 days, many people relapse and develop
jaundice, liver failure, kidney failure and bleeding.
|
 |
Can
I do anything to prevent Yellow Fever? |
 |
Yes
- We are an Official Yellow Fever Vaccination Center
and will issue and validate the International Certificate
of Vaccination. You need to come in at least 2 weeks prior
to travel to assure that you develop immunities. Proof of
vaccination is sometimes required during crossing of international
borders. |
